What makes you the Next Runway Star?
My versatility in fashion & all things aesthetic! I thrift much of my wardrobe & encourage others do to the same. Fashion was always the medium that I used to express myself, even when I didn't have any idea who I was as a person. Dipping my toe into the fashion world changed & saved me a hundred times over. The power of an outfit you feel confident in is worth so much more than you could imagine, especially for someone like myself!
What would this once in a lifetime experience mean to you and why?
I would have a better future, honestly. There aren't many paths open to me as an intersectional minority right now. Being able to step onto the runway would be the highlight of my life (I don't plan on getting married lol). This opportunity could help me take control of where my future is headed, will stabilize my entire career & household, and ensure I can keep going while things get harder out there. To me, that's priceless.
What are you most proud of about yourself or what have you overcome and why?
I'm proud of myself for a lot of reasons. It's a miracle that I've been able to get this far in my life, much less career, and just making it this far, to me, is unexpected & brings me hope. I'm proud of myself for surviving everything I've been through until this moment. I was diagnosed with a lifelong, incurable disability when I was only 9 years old, had parents that disregarded my health on multiple occasions & were detrimental to my mental health. I've been through all sorts of therapy programs & treatment for the scars left by my abusers. I've been ostracized & isolated for being different, for not fitting in, for being "weird" or for just trying to be included. I overcame it all because I've healed & developed self respect & confidence in my ability to succeed in this disabled body & in this life, with the cards I've been dealt.
What would you do with the $20,000 cash prize?
Half of it will go towards getting the surgery I've needed most of my life & have been fundraising for for years. The rest of it will be going towards rent & utilities, and anything left I will use to go back to school, either in law, or fashion, I haven't decided which yet!
