What makes you the Next Runway Star?
I I am a natural-born leader with a strong affinity for fashion, and this passion is reciprocated. I possess a well-rounded personality, combining intellectual depth with a grounded approach. As RuPaul aptly states, I am unique, talented, and outgoing. I thrive in the spotlight, always in a constructive manner. I firmly believe that age should be celebrated, and I challenge the notion that women over 50 are not marketable or appealing. I defy traditional expectations regarding age-appropriate behavior and attire. I am confident that I am destined to be the next runway star, as I am already a recognized figure within my community, workplace, and among my family and friends. Granting me this opportunity would not only elevate my personal brand but also bring significant attention and awareness to the challenges I have overcome. It is truly commendable to embrace one's inherent qualities and passions. Cultivating a profound appreciation for fashion can be an incredibly enriching .
What would this once in a lifetime experience mean to you and why?
This initiative is designed to empower individuals of color to pursue their aspirations without reservation. My upbringing in the Henry Horner Projects during the 1950s instilled in me a strong work ethic. Observing a mature woman who has overcome Alopecia will undoubtedly inspire many who contend with the societal stigma associated with hair loss. Furthermore, as a first-generation college graduate, I navigated challenging circumstances to become the first in my family to earn a graduate degree. My ambition to attend an Ivy League institution began in my youth. After independently raising two children, I returned to academia and successfully completed my Master's Degree at the University of Southern California. I am also a survivor of divorce, domestic violence, and endometrial cancer. This opportunity will provide widespread awareness that with faith and determination, all things are achievable.
What are you most proud of about yourself or what have you overcome and why?
I I take immense pride in my two adult children, whom I raised after my husband's departure during my time as a young military wife. My eldest, my son, was instrumental in enabling my return to college. He enlisted in the Navy at the age of 17. While initially disheartened by his decision to forgo higher education, I recognized the opportunity to utilize his educational grants to advance my own studies as I signed his induction papers. My son subsequently retired as a Chief Petty Officer after 24 years of distinguished service. My daughter pursued a similar path to my own, becoming a social worker for the Department of Children Services. We both attended California State University, Dominguez Hills, for our undergraduate degrees, and she went on to earn her graduate degree from the University of Southern California. She has since advanced to a supervisory role and possesses over 20 years of experience working for the County. I am proud of all three of us.
What would you do with the $20,000 cash prize?
Upon my retirement from DCFS. We founded New Impression, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing housing solutions for low-income families. We successfully launched New Impression Transitional Housing; however, due to a lack of sustained funding, we were compelled to cease operations after nine months. My current objective is to allocate resources to support individuals undergoing cancer treatments. It is a regrettable reality that individuals of color often face significant economic disparities, including limited access to transportation for treatments, food insecurity, and insufficient social support. A sum of $20,000 would be strategically utilized to furnish gas cards, gift cards, and other essential resources. Furthermore, a portion of these funds would be dedicated to engaging a grant writer to secure additional government and city grants, thereby ensuring the long-term sustainability of our initiatives.
