What makes you the Next Runway Star?
What makes me the Next Runway Star is my gifts. To elaborate, I have confidence and to walk at such a huge event in front of hundreds of individuals, especially who have high status, involves a high level of confidence which I possess. Furthermore, I am a hard worker. I have absolutely no experience with modeling, I just do photo shoots for fun when I can. However, if I were to be the Next Runway Star, I would do everything in my power to ensure my votes were not in vain. I would practice my walk in my bedroom and with colleagues in New York (if I get selected) to ensure that I will own it on the runway to make myself and my supporters proud. Lastly, I believe I have a nice personality to be around! I feel I am very open, kind, honest, and have emotional intelligence. That said, having a welcoming personality would make the Next Runway Star process much more enjoyable because of my easygoing nature and willingness to try various clothing styles!
What would this once in a lifetime experience mean to you and why?
This experience would mean everything to me because I want to become a fashion model and this exposure I feel will DEFINITELY get me to become one. Even if I do not become one instantly, I will for sure become one in the near future if selected. Furthermore, with this experience, I can already have a leg up in the modeling world and be even more comfortable when partaking in future modeling experiences! Lastly, I can be an inspiration to anyone interested in modeling, especially minorities! I am an African-American, 23 year old, bisexual female. There isn’t as much representation in the modeling world with identities such as mine. I do not fit in with the Eurocentric beauty standards as a black woman. People may say I’m too “old” to model and there are people strongly against the queer community in general. Lastly, as a whole, society favors men in general. To be a minority model would give that inspiration to other minorities that they too can become whatever they desire.
What are you most proud of about yourself or what have you overcome and why?
I am most proud about me graduating college for various reasons. First, not everyone wants to or has the opportunity to go to college. College is truly an intense higher education in terms of learning and finance. Not everyone has the funds to go to college, but I did. I am very fortunate about it. Furthermore, even if someone had the chance to go, they may not want to for whatever reason. Maybe college is too hard for them, they do not feel the need to go, or any other reason. All of which are valid answers. Therefore, to take it upon myself to have the want to go and graduate from Emory means a lot to me, especially since I went through a lot of hardship throughout it. The main one still present is my anxiety disorder. I only slept 3-5 hours a night and still got straight A’s before treatment. I say this because it shows my perseverance, to emphasize that one may never know what someone else is going through, and mental illness, at any age, is more common than people realize.
What would you do with the $20,000 cash prize?
What I would do with the cash prize is donate some of it to the people suffering in Gaza and to organizations supporting the Jeffrey Epstein victims. They have been suffering for too long and to see them beg for help while I could barely do anything broke and still continues to break my heart. Additionally, it just makes me feel guilty that I can barely help and just scroll right through their pleas. The economy is not the best right now so I would frankly prioritize myself first, but knowing I could actually have the funds to bring attention to and help these people would bring joy to everyone involved. After donating, I would indulge in myself and travel. I would like to return to East Asia, especially Korea, since I’m intermediate in the language and would like to improve it by being more immersed in the culture. If I win the $20,000, I will put it to good use!
