What makes you the Next Runway Star?
The fact that I have a one of a kind walk and that I recently decided to dream bigger… I only had one dream career growing up and that was to be a singer. My dream was crushed because of low self-confidence and my lack of discipline to learn the craft if I truly wanted to make it. But I never did. Fast forward about 20 years later, I’ve lived more life, grown into a man with more self awareness of who he is, and what he wants to be. That this year, I made a decision to fight for my dream to be an entertainer. I even came up with an alter-ego, named “Avir Evergreen.” A striking, confident, and versatile model whose life and skills continue to grow throughout the seasons. He makes sure that he’s wide awake in his truth and continues to follow the path of his North Star. So, here I am taking a chance on myself because I DARE TO DREAM BIGGER! Avir Evergreen is your “Next Runway Star!”
What would this once in a lifetime experience mean to you and why?
This would mean everything to me! I have always been told that I have “star quality” that “I’m meant for bigger things” but I honestly didn’t have the self-confidence in myself to fully trust that I can 100% do this, until now. I actually had an opportunity to come out to New York to network with another social media company but psyched myself out because of time and money. I limited my potential and made myself small because I wanted to be comfortable. The irony in that is, in order for me anyone to grow and become the person they want to be they have to be “comfortable with the uncomfortable” and just do it! I promised myself this year that I would build my creative community, make new connections, and try new experiences. So this is my shot at redemption once again. Will I make it? Who knows? At least this time around, I know I’ve tried and gave it my all!
What are you most proud of about yourself or what have you overcome and why?
A moment where I felt most proud of myself was when I applied for “Rae Talent Agency” in San Francisco and got in on my first try! The journey that it took for me to get there challenged my sense of identity, purpose, and my “why” to applying the in first place. The part that I struggled with the most during this process was my “self-identity” as a model. I believe sexuality plays a big part in how I wanted to present myself on and off screen because I already have a “masculine” look. But I enjoy the fluidity of femininity, especially when it comes to walking. So, finding the right people and spaces to be 100% myself was hard but rewarding. It taught me to be resilient, patient, and honest about why I wanted to be a model in the first place. The night before the interview, I planned everything ahead of time to make myself feel confident in how I wanted to present myself and brought a close friend for support. These experiences taught me everything I needed to know to be successful.
What would you do with the $20,000 cash prize?
I would first thank Amanda Nguyen for giving people like me the opportunity to showcase their talent and let it be shown on such a world renowned stage. Her story and support in providing a platform like this is nothing short of amazing so I would donate $5,000 to causes that help rehabilitate and house sexual assault victims. As for the rest of the money, I would finally take the chance to travel abroad and explore Japan & South Korea with my friends and family. This opportunity means so much!
